Comments:

Mr. Daravann Yi has spoken of his and his family’s personal journey under the cruel, brutal, Kamer Rouge dictatorship of the early 1970’s; when Daravann was approaching his teenage years.  An amazing, thrilling, sad, and heart-breaking tale of endurance and triumph during some of the most dire circumstances that humans can experience.

Mr. Yi has described both his personal feelings, fears, and suffering when speaking to organizations (mostly in the Philadelphia, PA region) and in his elegantly written story, The Salt Seeker, of this horrendous period in Cambodian History.

Daravann Yi's speaking engagement at our school was an event that students and staff alike were looking forward to. The experience greatly exceeded all expectations. When you meet Daravann after reading his book, he is not at all what you would expect. For a person to survive those insufferable conditions, you would think they would be hardened by the situation. However, it is a surreal experience to meet this incredibly upbeat, positive and generous man who is one of the warmest and kindest people I have ever come across.
When he told his story, he made history come alive for our students. Here was a man who had lived through a historic event that they had learned about in Social Studies. A first hand account of one of the worst mass killings of the twentieth century. They sat with rapt attention listening to every word.
When the presentation was finished, students asked questions regarding Daravann's life. They wanted to know what had happened to his family. Daravann also spoke about his life when he came to the United States. Students were visibly moved by his story and thanked him for coming to speak with them.
Words fail to describe the experience of being in his presence. You instantly feel welcomed by him. He is an inspiration. It is hard to put your arms around the concept of what he lived through and the loving, giving person he is today. Meeting him is one of the best experiences I have ever had.
