Daravann Yi is the author of this second book, Complete Puzzle; his first book is called Salt Seeker. He survived the execution squads, starvation, disease, and forced labor of Pol Pot's genocidal Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia from April 17, 1975, to January 7, 1979. He escaped through a jungle filled with landmines to the safety of a refugee camp in Thailand in August 1980. After living at the refugee camp for a year, Daravann, his brother, Davin, his sister, Rasy, were granted permission to come to the United States on August 29, 1981.

Complete Puzzle is a story of how Daravann, a survivor of the genocide in Cambodia with no money or English skills, used my survival experience to make my dream a reality in the United States. His life has changed forever. Join him on this fantastic journey.

Readers' Comments

Daravann Yi was eleven years old when the Khmer Rouge seized control of Cambodia in 1975. He witnessed first-hand the genocidal horrors wrought by the brutal regime, which resulted in an estimated 2 million deaths, including many close friends and family members. Enduring years of starvation, disease, and forced labor, he made a daring escape to freedom through the jungle to the safety of a refugee camp in Thailand. He arrived in the United States in 1981 with only the clothes on his back and a dream in his heart. This is the story of Mr. Yi's new life in America.

John Hurst

In a compelling autobiography, Daravann Yi, a survivor of Cambodia's Pol Pot regime, describes his arduous evolution from a refugee in a new country to a role model in a significant urban college. Mr. Yi credits family and friends with his success, but, in truth, his courage and determination bring about his remarkable achievements – from an English learner to a college counselor. Mr. Yi's drive to conquer differences in language and culture enabled him to achieve his personal goals, and his credo – "live in the present, learn from the past, and plan for the future" – serves as a model for all of us.
